Dark Souls Symphonic Story : Project Ramble #1

So.. I find myself at an impasse…

I’ve created all this material, but I don’t know what to do with it. Let me give you a little background information (I’ll promise to keep you guys up to date more in the future).

Check out these music fragments and let me know how you think the piece should continue.

So, we started with this main theme.

I really like this theme for a number of reasons. It conveys the feeling and atmosphere I want it to convey. I like its sound and its impact. I just really like it in general :).

Now, the problem comes from the fact that a theme is not a musical piece. It is a theme. It needs development. So I started doing just that, and I got a little carried away, basically creating a new theme :

Now it’s not to say that these two bits of music can’t coexist in the same music piece, they share some decent similarities after all, and it’s not unthinkable that one would lead to the other. However, it’s simply not the development of the original theme I meant for it to be. To make matters worse (or easier, depending on how you look at it) I feel that that second theme doesn’t quite have that same “Dark Souls”-vibe that my other theme has, so in that sense I should probably just kill my darling right there.

Now I’ve listened to it again and again (obviously) and one of the things I really like about this bit is this strings arrangement :

So, maybe I should work that into my “development” somehow, somewhere…?

Now, there’s one last thing I want to throw out there, and that’s a piano part I worked into the first theme (be warned, it starts quite loud) :

So, summarizing, I have a couple decisions to make. Continue with both “themes” and connect them somehow? Start over on the development section of the first theme? Continue with the piano part? Start over entirely, or keep the strings of  the second theme and incorporate that into the piece somehow?

What do you guys think? Which pieces do you like best? Dark-Souls or no. Let me know in the comments!
